Program Description
The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biomedical Sciences is a four-year degree program that will produce a pathway for underrepresented biomedical scientists to serve as healthcare scientists or pursue graduate studies in Biomedical or Health Sciences. The foundation of the BS in Biomedical Sciences is the basic sciences; at the beginning of the program, you will take courses such as microbiology, physiology, chemistry, and anatomy. Then take your education to the next step with additional courses in biomedical research, genetics, health disparities, biopharmaceutics, and biochemistry.
Upon completion of this degree program, graduates will achieve the following educational objectives:
- Have an understanding of fundamental concepts in the core areas of anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology, genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology, and medical calculations
- Develop effective verbal and written medical communication skills
- Understand the impact of health disparities on the delivery of health care
- Apply fundamental concepts in the biomedical sciences to health care issues, in particular, in the detection, treatment and prevention of disease
- Understand the contribution of biomedical science disciplines to health care
- Understand fundamental research methods in biomedical research

The major in Biomedical Sciences has 4 different concentration options health administration, general, pharmaceutical sciences, and Advanced Health Professions.
General - The general concentration allows students to study a broad spectrum of biomedical sciences based on their personal interests and career goals. This concentration allows the greatest flexibility for transfer and application of prior learning or technical education (AAS) credits.
Health Administration - The health administration concentration gives you the opportunity to explore biomedical sciences and the administration of health care. Students will take courses across both disciplines to develop a wealth of knowledge that prepares them to enter administrative roles.
Pharmaceutical Sciences - The pharmaceutical sciences concentration is designed for students that would like to work in the pharmaceutics industry or pursue graduate studies in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Pre-Pharmacy - This concentration is for students who wish to pursue a career in one of the AHP fields (pharmacy, physical therapy, physician's assistant, nursing, etc.), by exposing students to the required courses for most of these programs. Program advisors will discuss your career aspirations and tailor your degree plan to your desired path. This concentration is also the pathway to the entry-level Pharm.D. degree at TSU.
Pharmacists play a key role in balancing complex combinations of medications with a patient’s allergies and tolerance. A pharmacist ensures that medications provide healing instead of harm from being administered incorrectly. TSU's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers a course of study, leading to a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
The pre-pharmacy courses provide a knowledge base and the ability to use critical thought processes in the biological and physical sciences.
The four years of the professional program incorporate a solid foundation of pharmaceutical science courses as well as a comprehensive sequence of therapeutics and professional practice courses. Students earn a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences after successful completion of the first two years of the professional program. The application of drug knowledge, basic science, and critical thinking to resolve problems of drug distribution and patient care are emphasized throughout the curriculum. In their first three years of the program, students gain initial practice experience through introductory pharmacy practice experiences in settings such as community and hospital pharmacies.
In the final year of the program, students have an opportunity to apply knowledge and pharmacy care principles to pharmacy practice situations in a series of advanced pharmacy practice experiences in a variety of patient care settings which include patient care areas of hospitals, nursing homes, community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, Indian Health Service facilities, and clinic pharmacies.
